A Drawing, A Nobel, and The Beauty of Persistence Last year I was honored with several commissions from the Gairdner Foundation to draw that year’s Canada Gairdner Award laureates as part of their announcement … that award is often a precursor to a Nobel Prize … and among the award winners I drew were Drs. Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman. Fast forward to now, and boom, they've just clinched the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine! Their research was the backbone for the game-changing COVID-19 vaccines we've seen administered globally. Drs. Karikó and Weissman are now the 97th and 98th Canada Gairdner Award laureates to bag a Nobel. This was not an overnight success— they have been working together and devoted to this research for more than 20 years. In 1981, Weisman earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Brandeis University, focusing on biochemistry and enzymology. He later went toBoston University, where I'm a proud alumnus, obtaining his M.D. and Ph.D. in immunology and microbiology in 1987. Post that, Weissman completed his residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He then moved on to a fellowship at the NIH, working closely with Anthony Fauci, who was then leading the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Karikó’s journey seems even longer — she grew up in a poor village in Hungary with no running water or even a refrigerator. She, however, excelled in science. She would go on to earn a B.Sc. in biology and a PHD in biology, and began her biology research in Hungary. But in 1985, the lab where she was working lost its funding, so her and her husband hid money in their daughter’s teddy bear and purchased a one-way ticket to the US (her daughter would grow and become an Olympic gold medalist rower). They met one another and started working together in 1997 while professors at the University of Pennsylvania. Karikó and Weissman struggled for years to get grants to fund their research and for the scientific community to take their work seriously. They, however, worked diligently — knowing they were on to something and working diligently until they found it. “We couldn't get people to notice RNA as something interesting,

Karikó and Weissman struggled for years to get grants to fund their research and for the scientific community to take their work seriously. They, however, worked diligently — knowing they were on to something and working diligently until they found it. “We couldn't get people to notice RNA as something interesting," Weissman said on Monday. "Pretty much everybody gave up on it." Here's what I've taken away from this: innovation isn't about overnight success. It's about doing the work, year after year. It's about believing in the process, even when the end isn't in sight. Their story is a brilliant reminder that when you lay brick by brick, even if skeptics question your pace or method, the end result can be monumentally impactful. They changed the world for the better. So, hats off to Drs. Karikó and Weissman. Your journey has not just given us a vaccine but also a masterclass in dedication and perseverance. Keep innovating, everyone, and remember: every brush stroke, every experiment, every late night in the lab— it all adds up. 🔬🎨 Music: Pixels Musician: Jeff Kaale #dra#drawinga#drawe#sketchl#illustrationt#artt#artworka#drawingst#artiste#sketchbooki#paintingg#digitalarte#sketchingbelprizewinner #nobelprize
