It’s strange how quickly something becomes “normal” when Allah allows you to have it every single day. You wake up in a bed. Walk to the bathroom. Turn on clean water. Open a fridge with food inside. Put clothes on. Leave a home that keeps you warm and safe. Call your parents. See your children. Go to work. Breathe without thinking about breathing. And because these things happen every day... Eventually you stop seeing them as blessings. They just become life. Until one of them disappears. Ask someone in hospital what waking up healthy is worth. Ask someone who has lost their mother what one more phone call is worth. Ask someone struggling financially what a fridge full of food would mean to them. Ask someone living through war what a quiet night in their own bed would feel like. Sometimes you don’t realise how rich your life already is because you’re too busy looking at what’s missing. We’ve become incredibly good at noticing the one thing Allah hasn’t given us yet... Whilst barely noticing the hundred things He gave us this morning. Gratitude doesn’t mean pretending your problems don’t exist. You can be struggling and still be grateful. You can want more from your life and still appreciate what you have. You can make du’a for things to change whilst saying Alhamdulillah for everything that hasn’t. Allah says: “If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more.” (Qur’an 14:7) Maybe today, instead of thinking about everything you still want... Look properly at what you already have. So many of the things you call “normal” today are things you would beg Allah to return if they disappeared tomorrow. Alhamdulillah for the blessings we notice. And Alhamdulillah for the ones we’ve become so used to that we’ve forgotten they’re blessings at all.
