As I said, I can't let Afroman's defamation trial pass without ensuring testimony from every deputy is memorialized on my pages, so here's another clip of Justin Cooley, the son of Shawn "Officer Pound Cake" Cooley. The younger Cooley testified he served in the U.S. Army and went to Afghanistan before walking through an "open door' at the Marysville Police Department in Ohio. He became a deputy with the Adams County Sheriff's Office in West Union, about 60 miles southeast of Cincinnati. Cooley and his father were part of the law enforcement team that searched the home of Joseph Edgar "Afroman" Foreman in 2022, and they sued for defamation and invasion of privacy by false light for Afroman's posts and videos making fun of them. (You can watch Cooley testify about Foreman's "pretty insulting" comments here @Meghann Cuniff.) The turmoil after the raid, which resulted in no charges, included an internal investigation after deputies reported taking $4,400 from Afroman's home but returned only $4,000. Deputies testified about vitriol from strangers when they responded to calls in the community. Cooley said in direct-exam on Tuesday (March 17) that the issues became "too much to handle, you know." He testified he "needed money" and "was trying to at the time buy a house, adopt kids." "So I come in off vacation to deal with this, and because of the backlash, I began to hate that agency. I began to hate all these officers over here, you know, this whole thing just turned my world upside down," he testified. Cooley's lawyer Robert Klingler asked jurors to award $3.9 million in damages. You can watch him explain how he wanted the money divided between the plaintiffs here @Meghann Cuniff. You can watch Judge Jonathan Hein publish the defense verdict here @Meghann Cuniff. #law #police #court
