Peter Norman ( pictured far left ) was an Australian Sprinter who took the World by suprise in 1968 at the Olympic games in Mexico. In the 200m final - Norman managed to win silver with 20.06 seconds an Oceanic record to this day. However it was what followed after that gave Norman his legacy & immortality. Smith who had won Gold & Carlos who had won Bronze both wanted to take a stance against systematic segregation & the rampant racism back in the US. They also took off their shoes to highlight poverty of African Americans at the time. So both Carlos & Smith do the black power salute whilst wearing the badge of the Olympic Project for Human Rights. Nonetheless, Norman, a kid from Melbourne knows whats about to happen as it is discussed. Carlos & Smith expected Norman to be fearful or leave - however he was happy to take a stance & even suggested to Smith & Carlos sharing their gloves with him as an act of unity, forever creating one of the most iconic photos in Olympics & Athletic History. Norman at the time knew Australia wasn’t exactly perfect either so he took a stance alongside Smith & Carlos. Smith & Carlos returned home as heroes of the Civil rights movement. However, unfortunately for Norman he was unofficially sanctioned & ridiculed at length. He wasnt selected for the 72 Olympics & never ran again at that level, despite him being Australia’s best chance for 200-400m medals. Norman died in 2006 aged 62 still ostracised from Australian Atheltics. Both Smith & Carlos delivered Eulogies at the funeral. However, finally in 2019 Norman was honoured for his powerful demonstration & a statue was unveiled in his honour. Forever a hero - Peter Norman. 🇦🇺🫶 #australia #olympics #olympicsport #athletics #athletic #aussie #peternorman
