Feeling guilty about renting? Time for a reality check. Owning a home is more expensive than ever. And I’m not talking about the down payment and the mortgage cause that’s a given. I mean all the other stuff that no one wants to tell you. All the visits to home depot. & all the weekends wasted repairing & maintaining. I’m not anti-homeownership but truth is that housing has become unaffordable for most American. A single-family home now costs 5.3x the median household income. This is double what is considered affordable. Over 20% of homes are purchased by investors, this includes institutional and smaller mom-and-pop investors. Another factor is that baby boomers are choosing to stay in their homes rather than move to assisted living facilities. And finally, new home construction has been backlogged for decades. There was a shortage of 2.3 million homes by 2022. So why doesn’t the government do something? Because most Americans who own don’t have a problem with home prices increasing since it benefits them. And that’s why when we as a society started turning housing into an investment we began creating the problem that we see today. Housing should be a necessary commodity. Something we all need and should be able to afford such as food. Once we turned housing into an investment, there was now an expectation that housing prices would increase rapidly and become a nest egg for retirement. We are now seeing the result of that progression. I’m 42 & I still rent. I’m planning to buy in Portugal only because the rental market is more limited here. Buying is not a necessity for me to reach my retirement goals. I’m still building wealth thanks to my investments & I’m still living below my means. That’s what matters. No point in buying a home if it’s going to make you house poor. This is why I encourage you all to invest in the stock market to build wealth rather than chasing real estate that you can’t afford. Unlike housing, it is still accessible & significantly more affordable. Do you think buying a home is necessary to build wealth?
