David Petraeus was the top U.S. commander in Iraq and Afghanistan and the director of the CIA. He wrote the playbook on counterinsurgency warfare, a hawkish manifesto that outlines how to quash local resistance to imperialistic military campaigns. When he was hired at Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts (KKR) after he was fired from the CIA (cough for sharing classified information with his mistress cough), he told a journalist that his new job was

WHY DOES AN INVESTMENT FIRM NEED ITS OWN CIA? Here's Petraeus himself explaining, in a podcast episode from 2023: "I identify ways to reduce risk, so that we have the confidence to make investments. Once we've made investments we help the companies that we own as they run into problems.” Translation: when private companies owned by KKR (like #CoastalGasLink) are threatened by on-the-ground resistance (like Wet'suwet'en and Gitxsan land defenders), David Petraeus steps in to "neutralize" the risk to the investment, AKA repress, dispossess, surveil, and harass the people saying “no.” When Climate Defiance confronted Petraeus about his role in the violent dispossession and criminalization of the Wet'suwet'en, he straight up lied, saying "we don't have any army or security." He also claimed to know nothing about #CGL, one of the investments he was specifically hired to de-risk, vaguely referring to it as "a pipeline, uh, in the, um, through tribal areas of Canada." David Petraeus and KKR have inflicted years of violence on the Wet'suwet'en, their land, and their allies and deserve to be publicly and unapologetically called out.
