@chloe.crsp: We went to Shifen, a small village in the mountains near Taipei, famous for its lanterns. Tourists come there to write their wishes and let them float into the sky above the railway tracks. Unfortunately, once we arrived, the reality was different. 🏮 We realized that just a few minutes after taking flight, the lanterns fall back down and accumulate in the surrounding nature. The result: a lot of waste scattered across rivers, forests, and fields, tarnishing the natural beauty of the area. This sight, far from the idealized images, reveals the environmental impact of this practice. Shifen is more than just flying lanterns. It’s a village rich in history, surrounded by stunning landscapes. Preserving it means honoring both its culture and its environment. the locals even tourists can join the cleanup and get paid based on how much you retrieve. i saw a leaflet when we went there. but also it’s rice paper. it dissolves

There was one lantern shop there that sells a 100% biodegradable lantern, mo metal scraps whatever.

We went here via a group tour. We also didn’t choose to fly a lantern because of the waste. But the local tour guide told us that these wastes are being picked up by locals and they’re paid for it.

I believe Shifen is one place in Taiwan that is allowed by the government to release lanterns (aside from Pingxi and other parts of Jiufen). Also, locals are getting paid by picking up lanterns.
