Oklahoma father Elliott Binney has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty in the 2024 rollover crash that killed his 16 year old daughter, Shelby Binney. Prosecutors said Binney was driving at a high rate of speed in rainy conditions while attempting to pass other vehicles in a no passing zone when he lost control of the SUV, causing it to roll multiple times. Shelby was ejected from the vehicle and died from her injuries, while Binney’s wife and two other children survived with injuries. Investigators said Binney admitted he had taken a gulp of vodka while driving and that an open bottle of vodka was found at the crash scene. After the rollover, authorities say he fled on foot, leaving his injured family behind before he was later located about 40 miles away. Although prosecutors said they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was legally impaired, they argued his reckless driving and decision to flee the scene justified the prison sentence.
