In some states if you advertise 24/7 you can’t refuse work. So you advertise 23 1/2 hr service so you can refuse jobs if you want.

It was done so that when they were listed in the yellow pages in a phone book. 23 1/2 would be listed before 24 hour towing.

The story I heard is that it took 23.5 hours to pull a tractor trailer up a very steep hillside on the PA turnpike, and they were the only ones that could get it done after other companies failed.
