Unfortunately it goes straight to the owner and the servers DO NOT get any of it.

It’s legal BUT…They’re required to put it on the menu (in small print) and have to remove it from the bill if asked.

They're lying if they say it's for insurance or whatever. It goes into the exact same pile of money as everything that's not sales tax. I.e. PROFIT.

This is so LA coded. I swear in FL the employer doesn’t put surcharges on unless the party is over 6+ people. I served a 112 party with 4 other employees we definitely put 20% grat to the guest. But 3

Couldn’t they just increase menu prices if they need more to cover overhead?

you're spot on. I've been on both sides of this! customers in a tipping culture are already paying the bulk of waitstaff wages. it's gone too far! I bet the servers aren't allowed to talk about it.

I had an aggressive conversatiom with an Alamo Drafthouse manager when i found out that the 18% Service Charge doesnt go to their employees. It’s just another fee. Why not work that into the menu pric

as someone who worked cost analysis for restaraunts and kitchens... those things are already budgeted out in the cost they charge for the food and drinks.

Even if this goes towards insurance, which would be great for employees, it is very lazy of the employer to not just add an increase to the menu if needed and then pay out the benefits from that

The issue is that it the hospitality industry has typically never had benefits, so instead of having no insurance they’ve started adding a fee specifically for it instead of raising prices

I went to a restaurant recently and we were going to take our leftovers to go. But there was a 7% charge for any to go boxes...

Sounds more like a fee to cover the credit card fees the restaurant pays when ppl pay with a card

So this is not all resturants , we put a surcharge on ours during Covid and it was for sanitation and stuff like that, and then after that boss decided since no one tipped they would just add that on and it would be our tip, so the surcharge came to us, so it depends on the restaurant don’t be scared to ask your server most the time most of us are too honest and will tell you exactly what it is for and who it goes too lol I worked for another company that did it this way and we never seen it ever !
