DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi wants Apple to reveal more information about its supply chain. In an interview with DW, he called on the US tech giant and other smartphone manufacturers to enter negotiations with his country instead of purchasing minerals through Rwanda. He outlined an illegal cross-border mineral trade that circumvents DRC's economy. The inquiry comes after an Amsterdam law firm accused neighboring Rwanda and private entities of laundering tin, tungsten and tantalum - known as 3T – and other conflict minerals from Congo. In an exclusive interview with DW, President Felix Tshisekedi said the illegal mining must stop and indicated his country is willing to talk peace with Rwanda. "I want to give peace a chance as much as possible. But obviously that's not because of weakness and we're not always going to be patient like this, wishing for peace." According to DR Congo, the United Nations and Western countries, neighboring Rwanda is backing M23, a rebel group which took up arms in late 2021 after years of dormancy and seized large swathes of North Kivu province in the eastern DRC. The rebel group then allegedly started extracting minerals from the war-torn region. In the interview, Tshisekedi accused Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame of sabotaging the peace process between the two nations. "It's enough what he’s done to my country and my people, and it’s time for him to leave the territory, the soil of my country. That's what I want to get from him." Rwanda has long brushed off the allegations, but in the past President Kagame has said he is sympathetic to M23 and accused the DRC of itself supporting a rival Hutu militia. #drc #democraticrepublicofthecongo #apple #smartphones #minerals #mining
