WHERE DID OTTAWA ACTUALLY GO FOR MONEY? 10 years of tax increases, in Finance's own numbers Everyone's worried Ottawa is coming for regular people's savings. So I checked where it actually went over the last 10 years. It's a very different list. 1. 2016: a new top bracket on income over $200,000, worth about $2 billion a year. Income splitting for couples with kids ended, and trusts set up in a will lost their lower rates. 2. 2018: private companies. Family dividends get taxed at the top rate unless they work in the business, and the small business rate shrinks past $50,000 of investment income. 3. 2022 to 2024: banks and big companies. A one-time tax and a permanent surtax on banks and insurers, a tax on share buybacks, and a tougher minimum tax for high earners with big deductions. 4. The biggest increase proposed, on capital gains, was cancelled in March 2025, and the bottom tax rate went down from 15 to 14 percent. The broader changes hit credits and the TFSA limit, and none of them touched a savings balance. 5. The one I'd watch: pension income splitting. It's worth about $6,000 to $7,000 a year to a couple with one $80,000 pension. If you split, run your plan once without it. Did any of these land on you? The full guide is in my paid community at calmmoneycoach.com General education only. Finance Canada budgets 2016 to 2025. The pension splitting figure depends on the province. #canadiantaxes #federalbudget #pensionsplitting #retirementcanada #personalfinancecanada
