As a person living in Alaska and owning horses here I assure you nobody does this we use blankets the way they were designed but hooking then the first way you had it and adjusting the straps properly

Yes! Not criss cross either, always looped through each other so the blanket doesn’t shift!

this is the only way we're taught in australia. i've never had horses with rubbed legs or issues involving the back of the rug. plus less chance to get hooked on something!!
