My comment to the FDA: “As a physician, I would like to strongly urge the FDA to provide timely updated COVID-19 vaccines (including mRNA and NovaVax as both options are effective and helpful) to everyone 6 months and up, starting this fall. COVID-19 still affects people, maybe not as frequently as in 2020-22, but it still hospitalizes people of all ages, even those considered “young and healthy.” Even children do get sick and hospitalized, as shown in multiple journal articles. Restricting vaccines to age 65+ or “at higher risk” does not let vaccines get to an uptake level to provide adequate protection against spread. As a new father, I want my newborn child to be able to get protected against COVID-19 as soon as possible, which would mean getting a timely updated vaccine at 6 months. All the COVID-19 vaccines have undergone randomized, placebo-controlled trials. To force new versions to undergo placebo-controlled trials again would delay their benefit. It is also unethical as it forces some children and adults to forego protection against a frequently-mutating virus.
