@msemilyrose11: Replying to @U1928 bottom line, removing half is *pooping* on our starters behalf. They need help. We all need help. #sourdough #tutorial #sourdoughdiscard
can you do a video on how you wash your containers?

You may have answered already & I apologize if you have, is the rubber band on the jar to see how much it rises?

Marnie :
All the sour dough recipes I’ve been going by on King Arthur still call for store yeast. And because my starter isn’t consistently active (my house is too cold I think) I go by the recipe. An tips?

Babe With The Power :
so then, TECHNICALLY, could you begin with a teaspoon or tablespoon of flour, etc?

How do you store discard until you use it?

I don’t understand people’s attachment to their discard. Use it or toss it, it’s not hard.

you are the first person I've found that's actually said what the starter is for! sounds like a no-brainer, but i had no concept of how it would be used until now. my obsession continues lol

Kathy Fields Housewr :
So with the discard, do you just keep feeding that as well so you have two starters??? 🤷🏻♀️

Channy♥️ :
so why is the half poured out considered not alive when it was with the live starter? can't you just do another batch with the discard since it came from the live starter?

So can you freeze the discard and keep it for months?

Michaela Burbank :
Do you just refrigerate the discard and take out when you want to use it for discard recipes?

But why waste it and not use it??

Ok i keep getting a hard film on my starter. I keep it in a mason jar with a paper towel and Mason ring. I thought it has to breathe. I’m new help lol

So like, can that discard go to a friend to share the starter? Is that what people buy when you buy some from someone’s starter?

Great explanation. Also, you have singlehandedly convinced me that I can start my own starter and my husband is now concerned by my level of hyper focus. 😬🙃 Wish me luck!

The easiest way to think about this is that you don’t want to feed/waste more flour with the second feeding. So by removing some, you have less in the jar, and therefore don’t need to feed it/waste 1)

But why can’t you make bread from the discard? Why are there “discard” recipes and starter recipes? Isn’t the same thing?

(1/2) Omg thank you so much for answering this. I’m thinking of making my own starter for the first time soon and I was so confused about the whole discard thing.

I’m on day 8…and my starter is doing nothing. Feeding twice a day now. Doing exactly what you did. Any advice?
