Let’s talk about KNOWING the breed you’re getting 👇 Stalking, chasing, nipping, and barking at anything that moves? Common training issues herding breed owners run into, and a symptom of what they were meticulously bred for, for generations and generations. While many amazing owners take on working breeds (like Kelpies, Cattle Dogs, and Collies) and provide them with a truly fulfilling life, too many people are still buying these breeds as pets with little/no knowledge on them, and wondering why their dog “misbehaves” when all they provide is a walk and a game of fetch… While many of these behaviours can be very effectively trained and managed, especially when given an outlet for the specific “problem” behaviour, the fact is - you simple can’t fight genetics. Seeing these genetics expressed doesn’t make them bad or naughty, and it shouldn’t always be viewed as something to “fix”. Herding dogs are brilliant creatures and that expression of breed purpose is a beautiful thing to behold - it just need’s to be channelled into the right places! The more you meet these needs, the more you can develop those fundamental skills of when to be in work mode, and when to switch off. For a working line kelpie that herds cattle every day - they quickly learn how to have an “off switch”, at the direction of their handler. This is because they are constantly having their needs fulfilled through their work, and have developed an incredibly deep relationship and high level of cooperative with their handler as a result. Herding breeds are also always actively trying to conserve their energy where possible as they work, and because they exert a great deal of mental and physical energy, and they learn the importance of switching off and resting. Being empowered with the time and knowledge to recognise, redirect and fulfil herding behaviours will lead to a happier, less stressful life together. Whether it’s structured play, agility training, advanced obedience, herding classes - give them a outlet instead of fighting their instincts. #herdingdog #herdingbreed #kelpie #australiancattledog #bordercollie
