Everyone Walks Past This Mine. Nobody Knows the Lights Are On Inside. A hundred years ago, miners drove this tunnel into the mountain chasing gold — and left with nothing but an ore cart and a set of rusty rails. The boards went up, the bushes grew over, and the mountain kept the tunnel to itself. Until I pried the boards off. I rebuilt the portal in heavy timber, hung a door with a gap for the rails, and put a solar panel on the slope. Inside, I kept everything the miners left: the rails now run flush through my warm wood floor, and their old ore cart rolls along them as my kitchen island, stacked with firewood. The rock walls became a wood barrel vault with a glowing stove, and a side chamber I broke open with a breaker became a full bathroom — drain, tiles, glass shower, all inside the mountain.
