besides the stats the other people have mentioned... local news (case for every city) continuously runs crime reports (republishing police) because it is low effort to report and grabs attention

a lot of scary stuff goes unreported. I was pushed into the bus lane by a crazy person the police did nothing about it even though they caught the man right there. They let him go no polive report

I feel similarly about LA, and especially our transit system. My thing is - is I wasn’t hearing a story here or there, I’d be scared. The fact I hear the stories means they’re not that common

There are different types of crime. The subway is really safe for things like property crime, but random acts of violence are just a part of living in a big city.

Hard dichotomy of like: literally safer to take the subway than a cab, car accidents happen 100X more than subway violence but also if the vibes are bad that’s a real problem we need the MTA to address with barriers
