I think the trick to this one is internalising the percussive rhythm, in the same way you might do any regular strumming pattern. Because the technique is so alien, it's easy to settle for ballpark quality, as if you're clumsily ordering a coffee in a foreign language.

But if you can get the notes to sit evenly and achieve an even dynamic throughout, then it starts to click. And Groove. Hearing Edward play it in all those live solos is incredible, because it's clear that by that point, he had it so mastered that he could do it in his sleep. At which level, the groove is ferocious (even at a higher tempo). There's some contention about where beat one is, but after analysing many live clips, I believe the pattern goes like this: i=Index (Picking Hand) p=Thumb (Picking Hand) 2=2nd Finger (Fretting Hand) i 2 p 2 i 2 p p 2 i 2 p 2 i 2 p The core pattern I recommend mastering is i 2 p 2. Then all you need to do is double up on the thumb the next time around, and snip off the very last note to make it fit into the 16th note grid. It's surprisingly simple when the pattern emerges. But before then, it can feel like an Escher drawing!
