@justinbieberthecat_: 1/6: I’m seeing a lot of misinformation about the bird flu so I wanted to make a video addressing it. I think folks are having a hard time gauging the level of risk, which I’ve seen exacerbated by people sharing information without sources. I encourage you to seek information from virologists, who have the most expertise on a rapidly developing situation, and to ask your own vet. Gather your information from multiple, official sources, like the USDA and CDC. The biggest thing you can do to protect your cats is to halt feeding raw & freeze dried raw. Please remember that this is about more than just our pets, it’s about preventing opportunities for this dangerous virus to spread to humans. I am not anti-raw & I am sad to have to transition my cats back to canned food, but now is just not the time. Currently, poultry and waterfowl are the biggest vectors for H5N1. Songbirds only account for 2-3% of infections. Given that viral load matters in cross species transmission, and given that the vast majority of cases in cats are linked to contaminated food, I feel quite safe taking my cats outdoors in my area - but I would recommend you exercise caution if you own chickens, are neighboring a dairy or poultry farm, or have a lake in your backyard. I’m also seeing a common misconception that the current strain of H5N1 is airborne. This was observed in a single study in ferrets which used a genetically modified mutation of the virus. That modification was found to be inefficiently airborne. I unfortunately believe a lot of confusion is coming from Google’s inaccurate AI summaries. It’s important to note that the situation is evolving quickly & we’re learning more each week. I am working with the information I have available today, and am ready to pivot based on any new evidence we receive. I hope this can ease some worries. I am not a scientist - I am just a nerd with cats. Links to the sources I’ve referenced here can be found in my profile. They include the USDA, CDC, National Library of Medicine and American Veterinary Medical Association. I’ve made sure to include studies that include cats, specifically. #birdflu #h5n1 #avianinfluenza #catio #catsafety #indoorcats

Ours are already indoors, but I was feeding them raw freeze dried treats that I have thrown out. Switching to a jerky type treat for now.

Relieved that there is a source that says outdoor time is ok on a harness, but I'll keep my cats in until this is a more widespread thought. My cats are really missing outside time though

If we choose to take off our shoes to prevent bringing bird flu into the home, would it be better to leave it outdoors or leave it indoors by the door? And is there anything specific to put shoes in?

What (very general, nonspecific) part of the country are you in? I am in the DC area, and my harness cat is stir-crazy without walks.

My yard backs up to one of the biggest wild bird refuge areas in western WA so we will be indoor only no catio for a while. Thankfully it’s rainy so I have an excuse 😂

All in all, make choices that best fit YOUR cat! Personally my cat will be staying inside because her meds are an immunosuppressant!

We live next to a lake with lots of birds and have had avian flu deaths (swans, geese, ducks). If we walk our dog through the neighborhood is she at risk of bringing it in on her paws and spreading it

Can you please provide the cases where all the cats that have died from eating raw meat? I'm pretty sure there is only 2, most have passed away from consuming raw milk.

1/2 A summary of studies was published re H5N1 in infected poultry products. Scientists have tested the longevity of the virus. It can survive quite a while at fridge/frozen temps, but

I haven’t let them outside once (supervised on the porch) and I don’t even go outside myself much. I strip down all clothes the moment I come home and wash them. I’m scared for them.

If you’re continuing to feed raw, which 100% you can, make sure it’s human grade, not pet grade, and the company you go with they test at every stage. To be even safer, avoid all poultry.

quick correction on your caption, cause this is all so necessary, but h5n1 is airborne. It’s why the docs two clade 2 cases wore PPE and masks. The CDC also recommends masking if workingaround animals
