Lena didn't remember saying goodbye. One moment she had been standing inside Maya's apartment, surrounded by the familiar warmth of people who had known her long enough to recognize when something was wrong. The next, she was walking down the hallway toward the elevator. The doors opened. She stepped inside. And only when the doors slid shut did she finally let herself breathe. The elevator descended through the building with a soft mechanical hum. Lena stared at her reflection in the mirrored doors. Her face looked composed. That almost made her laugh. She had spent years becoming exceptionally good at looking fine. The elevator reached the lobby. She stepped out into the cool night air without looking back. New York moved around her as though nothing had happened. Cars passed in streams of white and red light. Somewhere down the block, someone laughed loudly outside a restaurant. A taxi pulled to the curb, its brakes hissing against the pavement. Lena stood on the sidewalk with her hands tucked into the pockets of her coat. She had seen Natasha with Tim before. Of course she had. She had watched them together for years. She had smiled when Natasha told stories about him. She had listened when Natasha complained about him. She had helped Natasha pick out birthday presents and endured entire conversations about dinner reservations, vacations, arguments, reconciliations. She had survived all of it. So why did tonight feel different? Because tonight, something inside her had finally become too tired to pretend it didn't hurt. Lena walked toward her car. Her heels clicked against the pavement, steady and measured. She unlocked the door and slid behind the wheel. For several seconds, she didn't start the engine. She simply sat there. The dashboard cast a faint glow across her hands. Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel. She closed her eyes. And there it was. The image she couldn't erase. Natasha beside Tim. The ease between them. The familiarity. The life Lena had spent years standing just outside of. She opened her eyes. “Get over yourself.” Her voice sounded strange in the empty car. She started the engine. The city swallowed her. The drive home should have taken twenty minutes. Lena barely remembered it. She moved through traffic on instinct, stopping when the lights turned red, accelerating when they turned green. Her mind stayed somewhere else. At a stoplight, she caught herself reaching for her phone. She almost called Natasha. Almost. Her thumb hovered over her contact. Nat. One word. One person. One button. She locked the phone instead. The light changed. Lena drove on. She didn't need to ask Natasha if everything was okay. She already knew the answer. Natasha was happy. Or at least she believed she was. That should have been enough. Lena had always told herself it was enough. She loved Natasha. That was the important part. Love didn't have to be returned. Love didn't have to be confessed. Love could simply exist. Quietly. Safely. Without asking for anything. That had been the rule. For years. Lena had made it herself. And for years, it had worked. Tonight, she wasn't sure she believed it anymore. #fanfic #Lenamiu #wlw #lenalalina #fyp
