You want to start at the crown and roll towards the back of your head mimicking a roller. You’re pulling it down too much that’s why it’s looks flat on the upper portion.

Instead of pulling the brush down towards your face, try a motion pulling it up to the sky / back of your head. This will create more volume at the root and help the ends to fall more naturally

I think your blow out brush it too hot not letting you style them how you want after curling them, maybe try a blow dryer and a brush instead maybe?

I don’t have your hair texture but buying hair rollers (NOT the foam ones. I get mine at dollar tree) changed my life. style it with hot tool first then let cool on the roller and add hairspray
