We had one rule growing up. You don't show up empty handed. Once you get your own kitchen you bring a dish. If you're over 18 you bring something dessert, flowers, drinks etc.

not American that's why I don't this kinda understand family dynamics. in my culture if we go as a guest we always bring something we are never empty handed. we always help to cook to wash the dishes

Family rules only those who can’t (kids, sick, etc) are exempt. Everyone pitches in either by cooking, getting ingredients, cleaning, etc. Everyone pitches in some form.

Me and my family always cook together, I usually don’t do my own dish mostly cause I fly in, I try to help out with clean up, getting last minute items and just helping around where I can.
