Share this very important tip! Often, when people are bitten by animals, they may not seek medical attention right away. This is particularly true when the bite is small and doesn’t need stitches. However, all animal bites pose a significant risk of infection. This is because the animal’s teeth penetrate the skin and inject bacteria underneath the skin. Even if there are no signs of infection, the risk of infection is very high because of this. That’s why all animal bites require antibiotics in order to prevent infection from occurring, and the sooner the antibiotics are started, the lower risk there is of infection developing. The second concern with all animal bites is the risk of tetanus. It’s important to ensure that the tetanus vaccination status of the person who is bitten is up-to-date. It is also important to note that in people who are unvaccinated for tetanus, additional treatment may be necessary to ensure the risk of tetanus infection is prevented. Lastly, some animal bites do pose a risk of rabies. It’s important to discuss this with a doctor, and in particular a public health specialist, who can take all of the information and decide if rabies prophylaxis is warranted in this case. Again, the sooner rabies prophylaxis is started, the less risk there is of developing the infection. Please share this and follow for more tips to keep you and your entire family healthy and out of the ER. . . . . . #infection #animalbite #dogbite #catbite #tetanus #rabies #vaccination #er
