@cspanofficial: The House on Tuesday approved its first bill of the 119th Congress — a migrant crime measure named after the 22-year-old Georgia nursing school student who was murdered last year by an undocumented immigrant. The Laken Riley Act was approved in a 264–159 vote, with 48 Democrats joining all voting Republicans in favor of the measure. The lower chamber previously passed the bill last March in a 251–170 vote, but the Democratic-controlled Senate never took it up. The bill would give law enforcement more power to detain undocumented immigrants accused of theft-related crimes like shoplifting. It now heads to the Senate, where new Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) is expected to call a procedural vote Friday. Eight Democratic votes will be required to get the bill past the 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster since Republicans currently have 52 seats while awaiting the arrival of outgoing Gov.
