- Israeli national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir said on X, formerly Twitter, that Israeli security services transferred prominent Palestinian political prisoner Marwan Barghouti from the Ofer prison in Israel into isolated detention. Ben Gvir said the decision for the transfer was made over information regarding a "planned uprising", without providing further details. Barghouthi, nicknamed “Palestine’s Nelson Mandela”, is one of the most famous Palestinian prisoners. He was arrested by Israeli forces in 2002 and sentenced to five life terms in prison for multiple accounts of murder of Israelis. He was the former leader of Tanzim, an armed faction of the Palestinian Authority's ruling party Fatah, and is considered one of the most popular Palestinian political figures and a potential successor to Mahmoud Abbas. - In 2020, Asma Mustafa, a Palestinian English teacher from Gaza, won the Global Teacher Award after she competed against thousands of teachers from 110 countries. Despite living in the blockaded enclave, with limited access to the outside world, Mustafa presented creative ideas to teach English through games and imaginary trips around the world. Four years later, Mustafa is forcibly displaced in the Al-Mawasi area in Rafah, yet she remains defiant as the Israeli war continues to take a toll on all aspects of Palestinian life. During the war, Al-Mawasi has been labelled as a safe zone by Israel, but now, hundreds of thousands of people who have evacuated northern parts of Gaza to al-Mawasi and currently live in makeshift tents there, are at risk of attacks as a Rafah invasion seems imminent. With the escalation of the Israeli operation in the south and the threats of the expansion of the Israeli ground operation in Rafah, Mustafa and her students are in constant worry that yet again they must lose what they have created in that area. They are concerned that they will be forced to move somewhere else and lose that sense of community they have found. - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the Egyptian capital on Wednesday on his first visit since 2012, in the biggest step yet towards cementing a rapprochement between the two regional powers. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi welcomed Erdogan on the Tarmac and the two exchanged a handshake. After years in which they regarded each other as persona non grata - due primarily to Sisi’s 2013 coup against his predecessor Mohamed Morsi, an Erdogan ally - relations between the two leaders have improved since 2021, following behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts. The Turkish president has said that discussions with Sisi would focus on Israel's war on Gaza and efforts to end the offensive that has killed over 28,000 Palestinians since 7 October. Turkey-Egypt relations are of critical importance not only for the two countries but also for the region, and must be evaluated as part of changing circumstances, analysts say. Mehmet Ozkan, a professor at the National Defence University in Turkey, told Middle East Eye that after 7 October, when Israel launched its offensive on Gaza following a massive Hamas-led attack on southern Israeli towns, regional actors have realised that there was a "need for communication". Erdogan is also expected to discuss ways to deepen bilateral trade between the countries, as well as a maritime delimitation deal concerning the energy lines in the Eastern Mediterranean. - Medical Aid for Palestinians said around 400 Palestinian patients are in a critical condition at the al-Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, while Israeli forces continue to attack the area. The charity said that dozens of Palestinians carrying sacks have been making their way out of the hospital, some of them carrying white flags. They added that despite the military calling on people to leave the premises, it is not safe to do so.
