Don’t have input about what it means to switch careers. But as an educated interior designer with a background in construction + architecture… I do want to point one thing out. I’ve see many people that want to switch careers who love to decorate. And there’s a big difference between a designer and a decorator…. I always like it to the difference between a license accountant and a bookkeeper. Both are relevant and have their place, but they’re very different.

I worked as a kitchen designer. When I say you cannot underestimate the amount of patience and finesse you need working with the avg client…I mean literally get ready to tear your hair out. People always want something for nothing, refuse to understand why a 10 sq ft pantry can’t fit into a 5 ft corner, and want it yesterday. People skills sooo important.

My second career came with higher prestige, a much higher salary, and lots of stress. Would I do it again? I would. It’s given me a much better life. Only she knows what’s right for her.

I left a 8 year nursing career. I have zero regrets, it a was the best decision I ever made. I did some study to upskill and build confidence in my new career choice. I'm now an Arborist Consultant. I get to be outside in the fresh air, no more shift work etc; and many other perks. Nurses are always in demand. If she changes career and discovers it's not for her she will easily find work back as a nurse but I think nothing ventured nothing gained. Life's too short to not do what feeds your soul. Also from my own experience nursing has so many transferable skills, more then she probably realises that could help with building confidence in a new career choice. If she's not financially in a place to make the leap completely I would go part time or casual while working on upskilling in her free time till she can leave nursing all together.

My dad worked at the at the job for his whole career 12-65. Because of that I would suggest planning the time of the switch to a new career to whatever timing sounds the best for your life. Is it now?

As someone who is 31 and had 3 careers, one thing I saw recently I loved was “the 22 year old version of you doesn’t get to dictate what you do the rest of your life”

I made a drastic career change at 42. I was able to work part time in my new career for the first year while keeping my old career before fully transitioning. If that’s something she can do I’d do it

All my nurse friends who have switched careers or stepped away to raise kids continued to take the minimum # of shifts needed to keep their license each year!

As a nurse who also left the bedside.. I feel her. Healthcare has changed and we are abused. Follow your passions.

I always say take a course at night school at a local tech. If you make it through and have the desire after tech school (the bones and meat potatoes) of design or any industry you should consider it

I have felt like I wanted to do interior design my whole adult life. 1 year ago I got the opportunity to gut a kitchen, design it. Same with a bathroom. All paint, flooring, doors, handles, (cont.)

If she can do any kind of part time interning/shadowing etc. I would do that first. I switched OUT of a creative field (fashion) after 5 yrs bc designing for others (brands) drained me.

10,000%! I switched careers at 29, and it's the best decision I ever made. When we are 19 years old picking our first careers we don't know enough about ourselves and the world to make good decisions.

Great advice you’re giving! From a purely pragmatic standpoint, now is NOT the economy to make drastic career changes unless you have a $$ safety net & time to “figure it out.” 🥰 - recruiter
