This novel begins the saga of the Poldark family of Cornwall as Ross Poldark returns wounded and defeated from fighting in the American Revolutionary War to find his father deceased, the family home a shambles, the business in a sorry state, and the woman he loves engaged to his cousin. And yet, he picks himself up and finds a way to become his own man...not always entirely willingly, as it happens, but with bravery and fortitude and his own moral compass, even as he takes risks and makes mistakes. And for that, I love him and I want to see where his story takes him.
