Single cell eats an amoeba! This gorgeous shape-shifting predator is a ciliate named Lacrymaria olor and even if it’s a single-celled organism, it has a very complex hunting behaviour! In this clip it managed to capture and eat a very tiny amoeba 😳 In Latin, Lacryma means ‘tear’ and olor means ‘swan’ which is pretty poetic in my opinion 😄. It has indeed a teardrop shape and has the longest of necks that can extend up to 2 mm in a couple seconds and in any possible direction, that’s about 7 to 8 times it’s body length!! At the end of this infinitely long neck is located the mouth, which engulfs preys that can almost reach half of the size of Lacrymaria itself. As Dileptus, Lacrymaria possess toxicysts that are able to paralyze a prey before its ingestion. Lacrymaria olor can either be in an active hunting mode, that’s when the neck is highly extended, or in its dormant mode with a retracted neck. It has been shown that when the head of Lacrymaria, which bears the oral apparatus, is removed, the body is able and oregenerate a new one! Video taken with my iPhone mounted on a BA310E Motic microscope with an @ilabcam ultra adapter 🔬 References: Coyle, S. M., Flaum, E. M., Li, H., Krishnamurthy, D., & Prakash, M. (2019). Coupled active systems encode an emergent hunting behavior in the unicellular predator Lacrymaria olor. Current Biology, 29(22), 3838-3850. Wan, K. Y. (2019).
