Imagine watching television and waiting to see whether your birthday would be pulled from a container—knowing the number could determine if you were sent to war. On December 1, 1969, the United States held its first military draft lottery since World War II. Inside a large glass container were 366 blue capsules, each containing a date of the year. The first birthday drawn was September 14, giving men born on that date lottery number one and the highest priority for possible induction in 1970. The lower your number, the greater your chance of being called. Numbers up to 195 were eventually reached. The lottery was supposed to be random, but statisticians later discovered that men with birthdays toward the end of the year—particularly in November and December—had received disproportionately low numbers. The capsules had been loaded month by month and apparently weren’t mixed thoroughly enough. For thousands of young men watching that night, a birthday suddenly meant something completely different. What number would your birthday have received? #VietnamWar #DraftLottery #1969 #AmericanHistory #HistoryFootage
