@happy.smallholding: Every year, I grow chives with my carrots. This is a classic example of companion planting: the strong onion scent of the chives covers the scent of the carrots, protecting the them from the carrot fly. Carrot fly is a pesky insect whose larvae attack carrots by burrowing into the roots. Chives are very easy to propagate. They are really easy to grow from seed, and once you have one plant - you can keep dividing it! I dig up my chive plants in February, chop them up, and plant them where I’m planning on growing my carrots for the year. You can chop them pretty small, as long as they have some root with stem attached. Just use a spade and press down quickly and firmly. They also self seed. I like to dig up all the seedlings that appear in the autumn and/or spring and grow them on in trays, planting them out in my carrot beds in the spring. Make sure you plant a lot throughout the bed to be effective. Better to have more, smaller plants than a few big ones 🌱🥕 They also have pretty purple pom pom flowers that are loved by pollinators. There are other plants you can pair with carrots to deter carrot fly, including onions, rosemary and sage. I choose chives because I think the combination of carrots and chives looks really pretty in the veg patch. Other ways to deter carrot fly including planting in a raised bed as carrot fly can’t fly higher than 60cm, putting a barrier around your carrots at least 60cm high, or using horticultural fleece.
