That sucks, but kudos to you for trying to help the guy. For me, this is the difference between being a business owner and an employee. As owners, we can choose to take a hit when we feel we need to.

I think next time you should have sold all lifters and timing components so you can avoid this since your going in it

Unfortunately, I think this is going to happen more and more as people aren’t going to have to money if it’s anything extra then what they were quoted

As my old boss would say 'we're not a charity'. As nice and respectful as you can be, their problems aren't your problems. You're doing what you can to help and people respect that, but usually not the one you helped out.

I hate the 4.7 & 5.7 timing. Only way to check it is take it apart and set it to the colored links.

Leakdown test the cylinders and put a new chain on? Wouldnt that make the job cheaper if all you needed to change was the chains and a rocker arm

if it’s not a common problem partnering issue it’s not your fault for not warning him. I’d give a little kickback to be nice, but a little one… like $100

Have you explained to the customer that no parts went into it and it’s just labor for the tear down? I get trying to help someone out but you got a family too you know

With all do respect, I wouldn’t be tearing down an engine with sludge in it. That’s asking to marry that vehicle.

Don’t hurt yourself to help him. They have to realize it’s a business. Not there to help out I’m there to feed the family.

Damn this is tough, especially being on your own. I don’t blame him for wanting money back , but I don’t believe that’s fair on you either. Having a kind heart makes it tough
