European teenagers are much more independent than their US counterparts at the same age. We are used to considerably more freedom and trust.

i think signing up to host is such a generous and wonderful thing, but please consider if you really have the capacity to care for another kid who may need some additional guidance at first!!

Exchange students come there to experience the culture, maybe be open to do “typical” stuff in your country with them even if you don’t normally do those things. That’s what I felt I missed out on.

Also give the host kid a run down of your daily life and schedule. Don’t just expect they’ll figure it out while rolling with it. Moving in to a at first strange family comes with a lot of

Welcome them into your home and include them in activities!! I was hosted by a host family recently and was never included in anything so I ended up leaving them

I LOVE it when my host mom brings me randomly a Starbucks drink. You feel like they really think about u. We really don't ask for much/dont need much, sometimes we just need some attention! ❤️

please make sure there is always enough food in the house, it's really hard to eat if there is no food at all or even no food you like

DRIVING!! Especially because I live out in the country, they often get so annoyed when I ask for a ride but like there is nothing out here like not even a neighborhood to take a walk😭

If we ever get sick while we’re there, we’ll probably miss our parents and their way of taking care of us. Maybe bring us some water, medicine or just sitting with us so we’re not alone means a lot ❤️

hygiane standars are soooo diferent depending on the country, ofc since the exange students come to your house they have to adjust to your higane standards. find a way to have that conversation (more)

try to involve them. My sister would often call home, crying, when she was an exhange student, cause her family would just go on trip and dinners without her.

my host family was very religious and they didn't accept that I was an atheist. I had go to church every Sunday and often give me sermons and try to "convert me". basically respect other beleifs

Hi :
I felt ‘on’ constantly. Please don’t be offended if they need alone or quiet time to themselves. Learning a new language and culture can be emotionally draining.

Don’t assume we know anything about how things work in the US! For example, it was very confusing to me when people gave me directs using north/south/east/west or when they spoke of intersections :(

Let them speak their native language in front of you, e.g. when they have other exchange students over. It can be lonely sometimes to not speak your native language
