“Hit yourself in the hand with a hammer, and try NOT to think about yourself.” - @drdrewpinsky 🔨 ⁣ ⁣ Shared this on IG and it resonated with many so I wanted to share here. I’m always looking to ‘make meaning,’ especially in difficult circumstances, and the pain I experienced the last few weeks was no different — it turned out to be one of my greatest teachers. 👁️⁣ ⁣ One thing I learned about pain is that it makes us selfish. We have no choice but to put ourselves first, which is sometimes exactly what the doctor ordered for those of us who have leaky boundaries + codependency from patterns in childhood. 💧 ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes pain or illness forces us to redirect our energy, to re-examine our boundaries, to realize what’s truly important to us. It gives us perspective. 🕊️⁣ ⁣ As we’re forced to call our energy back, out of sheer necessity and exhaustion, we get to see our environment (people, projects, commitments) in a whole new lens. ⁣ ⁣ - How is our environment responding when we’re not overextending our energy? ⁣ - Do those projects need us as much as we thought they did? Or are we standing in the way? Do things actually work BETTER when we take a step back from over-giving?⁣ - Would our energy be better directed elsewhere?⁣ - Are we as useful to people in our lives when we’re not over-giving?⁣ - Does putting ourselves first and having a solid boundary threaten the commitment? If so, is it a worthy commitment?⁣ ⁣ I wonder if you guys can think about your own experiences of pain in the same lens. Maybe that’s physical— chronic pain, an injury, debilitating emotional pain, grief or anxiety. I wonder if you can ask, “how is this pain asking me to see where I am overextending in places that are no longer aligned?” Where is there a lack of give and take? It’s the season balance after all ⚖️⁣ ⁣ Sit back and see clearly the way your environment responds. It’s all information to help you grow.⁣ ⁣ Sometimes it’s the only way we’ll get the message… the only way we’ll put ourselves first when our hand is forced. Because when you hit your finger with a hammer you have no other choice. A blessing or a curse, or maybe a bit of both because that’s the duality of life ❤️
