The words we we hear from our parents as children can have an impact on our belief system and the way we make decisions in adulthood. Did you realize that by the time you were 7 years old you'd developed the rules you'd use later in life about money, based on the things we saw our parents do, say, and how they acted? Always saw your parents fight about money? Even the thought of money today could cause you anxiety. Heard your parents say all rich people are a*Sholes? You could unconsciously be scared of building wealth because you "don't want to be a bad person". Hear your parents say phrases like "we don't have the money for that"? It could cause a lack and scarcity mindset, which could cause you to be scared of spending money today, cause immense feelings of guilt and shame even when you spend on necessities, or could go in the complete opposite direction and cause you to overspend trying to compensate for feelings of "not having enough" as a child (even if there were). PS. the language we use with our children matters. Instead of saying "we don't have the money for that", try saying something more specific about why. I personally love "that's not a prioirty right now", as it communicates the message that we use value based spending, and helps show children the difference between wants, needs, and tradeoff costs. Your money behaviors today are impacted by the things we learned as children (whether intentional or not). The first step to change is recognizing the unwanted behavior or pattern, and then working to take responsibility to change them and update your belief system. If you're looking for help learning about money and mindset, we're here to help 🤍
