Managing the risk of feeding cattle.🥩 The rush of fall isn’t just harvest and weaning around here. It’s also the heart of shipping season for the feedlot side of our operation. With shipping season comes empty pens & those empty pens gotta be filled with additional feeder calves that we purchase. I checked the markets today and OOFTA… calves are still so dang high. It’s kind of terrifying to purchase calves for close to $2000 and put all of the time, feed, etc. into them for another 8+ months when you don’t know for certain that prices will remain high when they’re ready to sell as finished fat cattle. We’ve been doing a lot of discussion on what our risk mitigation strategy is going to be this year with cattle. It’s not so bad when we raise our own, but forking out cash for outside cattle at that high price is what makes us really nervous. However, we have grain to feed and we need to fill the yards.. so we have to do it. We’re going to utilize livestock risk protection insurance this next year to help mitigate that risk and at least lock in the bottom at our breakeven price so we don’t lose our booty if prices tank. We went with LRP because it still keeps the top of the markets wide open — meaning we can still make that profit if prices are above where we locked in. The premiums aren’t terrible & it’s worth it with where we’re at in the cattle cycle for us. @Stockguard has a ton of great resources and you can create a free account to see LRP quotes online in seconds if you’re curious. Their breakeven calculator is another great resource too! Now I’m curious, how are you managing risk this year with cattle? #thatfitagovcate #LRP #feedlotlife #feedlot #FeedlotFriday #farmersdaughter #familyfarm #farmtok #ranchtok #cowtok #cattletok #feedlotlife #feedlot #feedyard #farmerfeeder
