The ciobănesc pups arrive like poorly rehearsed poets, all soft paws and unchecked optimism, their white coats blotched with black as if someone spilled ink on fresh snow. They do not yet understand hierarchy, or restraint, or the quiet tyranny of a creature that has already seen enough to distrust enthusiasm. There is, in the Romanian countryside, a peculiar education that happens without witness or ceremony, somewhere between the Carpathians’ long shadows and the slow, ancient breath of the Danube Delta. Dogs are raised on loyalty, on the sacred foolishness of believing the world wants to be their friend. Cats, however, are archivists of consequence. She lifts a paw not in anger, but in punctuation, a sharp, deliberate comma in the pups’ run-on sentence of curiosity. The swipe lands like a whispered proverb. Not yet. Not so close. Learn me first. And the pups recoil, startled not by pain but by the revelation that affection, like fire, requires distance to be endured. Yet something lingers in the aftermath, something almost embarrassingly tender. The pups circle back, slower now, as if reconsidering their own existence, while she remains aloft, a philosopher in fur, guarding her modest altitude like it were the peaks of the Carpathians. It is absurd and profound all at once, this negotiation between naivety and experience, this fragile choreography of approach and refusal. Isn’t that how we all learn the world, by reaching too close and being told otherwise?
