Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) filed a privileged resolution on the House floor Tuesday to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress. Since the resolution is privileged, the House now has two legislative days to act on it, setting up an expulsion vote for later this week. It will be the third time the House has voted to try to remove Rep. Santos, but this one seems like it has real legs after the Ethics Committee released a damning report before the Thanksgiving break saying it found extensive evidence of him committing criminal and otherwise unethical acts. The panel said its investigation “revealed a complex web of unlawful activity involving Representative Santos’ campaign, personal, and business finances” and that he “sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit.” His conduct, the bipartisan committee said, “warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House.” Rep. Santos, for his part, has refused to resign and seems intent on having lawmakers take the rare formal step to boot him from the chamber. “I know I’m going to get expelled when this expulsion resolution goes to the floor,” he said Friday night during a conversation on X Spaces. “I’ve done the math over and over, and it doesn’t look really good.” The Long Island congressman is also facing 23 federal criminal counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud, false statements, falsification of records, aggravated identity theft and credit card fraud. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts and criticized the Ethics Committee report as a “disgusting politicized smear” and a “grave miscarriage of justice.” It will take a two-third supermajority to expel him from Congress. #georgesantos #houseofrepresentatives #congress #expulsion #expel #cspan
