@cbcnews: More than six million Canadians don’t have a family doctor, so why is it hard for many internationally trained physicians to get a job in their field? Ismelda Ramirez worked as a family doctor in the Dominican Republic. After moving to Canada, she took a job at McDonald’s and worked tirelessly to pass her Canadian medical exams. But she hasn’t been able to get a residency, a crucial stage for doctors to get hands-on experience. The lack of residency spots is a major bottleneck to getting more internationally trained doctors working. Last year, 95 per cent of medical graduates from Canadian universities landed a residency spot, compared to only 42 per cent of international medical graduates, according to the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). Advocacy groups tell CBC News there are over 3,500 international medical graduates in Quebec and Ontario, and the vast majority aren’t working. The worry is they will simply leave Canada unless there are changes to make the process easier. This story is part of Welcome to Canada, a CBC News series about immigration. Part of the series is a survey of 1,500 newcomers and their experiences coming to Canada. You can read more about the results at cbcnews.ca. #doctor #immigration #news #canada

I feel like there needs to be some kind of standardized testing for doctors trained outside Canada. if they pass then let them be a doctor, we need trained doctors so badly.

That’s because Canada has different medical standards guys. Different countries have different rules, who would have thought?

I dont not understand why we ask for qualifications and give points for education and work experience when we dont even recognize the qualifications or experience. Wasting peoples time and efforts.

Bridge programs and testing should be made easier and placements created for in-need communities in medicine, and other disciplines as well.

This is so infuriating. We need doctors desperately! This feels like it should be a streamlined process—standardized testing of some kind and then let these doctors work!

I’m sorry but many of the international standards are not the same. They need to go through the same licensing process in Canada before they can practise (residency, royal college exam etc).

there are absolutely different standards. Do you realize the difficulty of getting into med school here in Canada, the standard will decline if foreign doctors do not get scrutinized.
