You don’t even have to click on an ad for it to hack you. Citizen Lab just published the first public proof of spyware delivered through targeted ads, and the way it found its targets is the same system that shows you ads every day. I think the most concerning part of this story is that the infrastructure used to target these people already existed. Advertising systems were built to collect information about us and track us across websites, and now that same infrastructure is being used to deliver spyware. I don’t think better security alone solves that. We also need to question how much information these systems should be collecting in the first place. There’s a lot more to this story.
