I think you’re right on. I teach writing to computer science students. Many students are overcommitted in other areas, so letting these programs do their critical thinking for them is super tempting.

Oooh. I want to read this! Do you happen to remember the author’s name, please? I think ASA has a report showing that sociology students are more satisfied with their work, but I haven’t heard this one yet. (We are lumped in with “the arts and humanities” at my university. I’m a sociology professor who studies/teaches about work and advises undergrads at a dying regional public univ.) Thanks so much for this analysis! I’m going to show my students next class. :)

I’ve taught undergrad nursing and this really stands out. They ace prereqs like Chem, A&P but struggle when they have to apply the prereqs to situational nursing scenarios.

My tech job is translating complex information into action items. AI can do some of that but it can’t translate data into memes and drive action. I can. Driving action is the value.
