Working at tech companies in a nontech role is a challenge. They want hard data on everything even when data can’t exist yet. They don’t want to be asked about potential impact. Just want to innovate.

this is such an interesting insight. Big yes on the part that tech bros see the inability to parse subtext for example as a failure so they want to-

I think you’re right on. I teach writing to computer science students. Many students are overcommitted in other areas, so letting these programs do their critical thinking for them is super tempting.

I’m a HS English teacher and let me tell you…it’s bleak out here. And I teach the dual enrollment kids who are headed to college, so I know it’s bleak for y’all too 🥴🥴

Oooh. I want to read this! Do you happen to remember the author’s name, please? I think ASA has a report showing that sociology students are more satisfied with their work, but I haven’t heard this one yet. (We are lumped in with “the arts and humanities” at my university. I’m a sociology professor who studies/teaches about work and advises undergrads at a dying regional public univ.) Thanks so much for this analysis! I’m going to show my students next class. :)

I’ve taught undergrad nursing and this really stands out. They ace prereqs like Chem, A&P but struggle when they have to apply the prereqs to situational nursing scenarios.

This resonates with me. I cherish my double humanities degree (philosophy, religion) and feel it has really helped me with my corp career. But am surrounded by tech bro mentality.

Former software engineer here, and I agree. Hiring in IT is all about what tech you've used, not your ability to apply knowledge.

I just never understood why both weren’t pushed onto the youth. Both STEM and the Humanities are very important and work together to solve life’s biggest questions. I love both disciplines so much

I have a dual degree, one humanities, one pre-professional, and I’ve always felt they taught me two entirely different ways and skills sets. And THIS exactly captures that difference! Wow.

My tech job is translating complex information into action items. AI can do some of that but it can’t translate data into memes and drive action. I can. Driving action is the value.

As a software engineer myself, totally agree with your points ESPECIALLY how every objective in tech must be measurable, otherwise it’s not worth pursuing

I work with Gen AI and most of us have advanced humanities degrees (esp. English Literature & Creative Writing). Recent hires are also severely underpaid, so interesting cycle.
