I've only used cover letters at the beginning of my career (25 yrs ago) and once recently when I was looking at a job that was outside my field. I think the cover letter is what got me the interview.

everywhere I look it sounds like cover letters are just a check box to make the recruiter think you care more. that's why I let chat gpt write it for me. if they're gunna use AI so am I

As a former manager I didn’t give a hoot about cover letters. I still use them as an applicant now with a twist. I just take their bulleted reqs and write a sentence or two I fulfill said req. never longer than a page. Always to the point. Make the recruiter and HM job easier.

I think it depends. Some places don't care, so I wouldn't make one if they don't want one. But if it's required or if it's for a job I really like, then I write one.

Personally, I won’t look at an applicant if there’s no cover letter. With limited space on a resume it can be used to set yourself apart.

As a hiring manager, the cover letter is the first check point! if it's terrible then they won't be short listed, if it's great then I'll look at the CV.
