Here’s the process of glazing a vase with a stepped top, this is the method I use for most of my larger pots. First, the outside is glazed by quickly plunging the pot into the bucket, which I do with a balled fist pushed down against the internal base. The aim is to get it fully submerged quickly, and to remove it rapidly too, this way, no section of the pot stays under for much longer than another. If this process were done slowly, with the vase lowered into the bucket gradually, and then hoisted out equally as sluggishly, then the lower half of the pot would draw in a much thicker layer and ultimately this could lead to the vessel being too heavy, or it could crack, or the glaze could flow off the foot and onto the kiln shelf. So, it helps to be fast. This process of forcing the vase under is relatively forceful, and it’s for that reason that I glaze the outside first, as if the interior already had a neat layer of glaze, (which dries into a fragile state), then pushing it under the glaze could likely damage it—hence why I glaze this piece ‘backwards’.
