I have one lab who got fixed at about 6 months with no heat cycle and she has had two mast cell tumors and chondrosarcoma. Large surgeries are now clever free almost one year. She’s 10 now.

My vet said after 1 heat cycle and before the 2nd, as the risk of cancer increases with each heat cycle.

two years, let the hormones complete the growth process. three different vets and my 30 year AKC champion breeder all said this.

I do not have a golden but spaying before 2 cycles is my biggest regret. My girls behavior completely flipped she turned reactive and hates other dogs. I have spent years and $$ on training. -

My breeder requires 2+ years, 2+ heat cycles, and my vet was on board with that plan as well

Ask your vet. Mine let me fix mine at 5mo before her first heat. My dog is doing great.

Fixed my 1st female golden at 5 years old. 2nd female golden got fixed at 10 months for behavior reasons with vet recommendation. Male australian shepherd got fixed at 16 months.

UC Davis has research (from last year, I believe) on spay/neuter timing recommendations by breed, and takes into account orthopedic and cancer risk

Wait until she’s at least a year old and had one heat that way you know her growth plates are all good!

As a non fixed girl dog owner, her heat cycles ended at age 6 so it’s really not that long to deal with! Cloth diapers on Amazon are amazing they stay on, don’t leak and she seems to be comfy!

We had ours done after her second heat, she was just under a year and half old and maintained a steady weight for a couple months! We were told this is best for her hormonal health and bone health.

You get so many mixed answers of whether to go before first heat or after. We talked to our vet and they said it was better to do it before so our girl was fixed at 6months.

We had our girls at 2 years-they were fully grown, out of the puppy phase, and no development issues. Worth the wait for us!

Vet tech of 16 years, one heat cycle is enough! Just lost my 16 year old golden - she was spayed at 6 months

I have a golden retriever and we waited until she completed her first heat cycle. I was told the issue with waiting too long is the risk of mammary cancer

My sweet girl got spayed after her first beta cycle. And when she got labs done before the surgery, they said she had an infection. That could have been related to the heat cycle.

I wish I knew the things I know now, but we got my first spayed around 4 months. I regret that. she passed away from skin cancer just before she turned 8 😭 our two boys neutered after they turned 2

I have a girl that’ll be 2 in St. Patty’s Day. When I first got her I was firm on waiting until she went through 2 heat cycles or until she was 2 years old whichever came first.

I have an almost three year old golden and my vet did an ovary-sparing spay for her around 16 months. That preserves the hormones to help protect her against cancers

For goldens and their higher risk of cancer, they recommend between their 1st and 2nd heat cycle. Other large breeds wait until 2 years

DONT yell at me :
I did alot of reading and everything pointed to an ovary sparing spay. I did that on her, she still gets heat(no blood) but it’s been a year and a half and she’s only had one since the spay.

My golden was 11 months and had first heat. didn't change her personality at all but she definitely calmed down a lot. Especially during "witching hour".
