I'm so glad you said this. ACOTAR is a giant red herring!! She was so pointed towards the romance and character arcs on the surface. No world building, no history and not a lot of lore. Why editor? Because it's all coming in upcoming books.

she does a lot of telling us about Elaine too; how sweet and selfless she is. I have yet to actually sew any of this though and it's been very frustrating!

Yes! This is one of the things that I feel like is so misunderstood. People say that ACOTAR is bad writing and then it gets better in the next books. I personally think that the writing is purposeful.

This reminds me of the scene in WAR where Nesta is supposedly rude to Mor about her dress. Nesta has been surrounded by people who “banter” in a way she isn’t used to and walks into a conversation where Mor and Cassian are bantering. Mor says she’d steal Nesta’s dress and Nesta says “lucky for you I wouldn’t steal yours” Everyone treated her like she was horrible. She shuts up and stops speaking. I think she just tried to join the banter and it was awkward. There’s just something about the way Nesta’s body language is described…Feyre and Mor’s reaction never sat right with me

I always saw it as Tamlin being a physical character - he’s a shapeshifter, whose has a prominent physical presence. He can only do things actively 😅

It has stuck with me that so many authors use “gossamer”. It irks me at this point lol

Couldn’t that be used to an authors advantage? Like say you have an extremely biased narrator who wants to manipulate the audience to think a certain way rather than show

I thought the first book was poorly written, but now I see I’m bad at analyzing fantasy fiction 😅 thank you for the content! I love finding out all the deliberate, small choices SJM made!

interesting since my takeaway after book 2 is that she didn't plan it at all while writing book 1 and desperately tried to retcon his character 😂

The phrase "It was all I could do to..." irks me so much. What? What was all you could do!?!?!? I swear every fantasy and romance author uses it and it makes no sense but been normalised 😭

Super interesting. I wonder if this stays consistent. She’s known a bit for telling not showing..like we barely get a description of rhy’s beast form, or she tells us how powerful the high lords are &

Does this change when it comes to first person and third person? If it’s first person are these words not just how the narrator is perceiving what’s happening? I’m writing and trying to educate myself
