I think there's a whole lot of communication issues that could be resolved if they just... talked. I will say there's no excuse to say what sister said, that's an inside thought/exclusive conversation

i of course feel bad for OP, but i so also feel bad for OP’s son. he’s been missing his family due to his mothers isolation processing, and OP should make an effort to make sure he isnt isolated too

Each person goes through greif differently it's not ops fault that sister smiled through hers. When I had one I basically shut down for weeks when my sister had one she let herself shut down 1/2
