What if getting ready for a date were less about making yourself desirable—and more about helping yourself feel safe enough to be yourself? For years, getting ready meant living entirely inside my head. What should I wear? What should I say? How should my face look? How do I make sure they like me? Unmasking has taught me to ask a different question: What does my body need before I walk into this experience? For me, the answer is often music, movement, and stimming. This is not the only way I stim, and stimming does not always look like dancing. But music helps me leave my head, release the energy moving through my body, and reconnect with what I actually feel. It helps me arrive at a date more regulated, present, and honest. The goal is not to make my autistic needs disappear before someone meets me. It is to understand those needs well enough to honor and communicate them. Maybe your version of getting ready looks like rocking, pacing, stretching, hand-flapping, listening to one familiar song, lying under a weighted blanket, or sitting in complete silence. Getting ready does not have to mean disguising your nervous system. It can mean caring for it. Before asking: Do I look right? What am I supposed to say? Will they like me? Try asking: What helps me feel like myself? What would help my body feel safe? What do I need to communicate? Can I be honest with this person? Dating should not require you to abandon your body so someone else can enjoy being around you. You do not have to suppress your autism to become desirable. You are allowed to stim, regulate, ask for accommodations, and arrive as your fully autistic self. For me, preparing for a date no longer means building a better performance. It means coming home to my body before inviting someone else to know me. Context note: This is Annika-first content—a window into one autistic and ADHD life, not a definition of autism or ADHD. I am white, relatively low support needs, and not physically disabled. My perspective is not universal, and what works for me may not work for you. Please take what resonates and make room for experiences different from mine. #annikaunmasked #autism #dating #unmasking #latediagnosedautistic
