If you throw a fastball with top spin, you already have a drop ball. If you throw a drop ball, guess what? You already have the foundation for an off-speed drop. Let me explain. Today I had B go back to a pitch I taught her a while ago — an off-speed drop. We kind of forgot about it, but when I had her spike her pointer finger and throw her drop ball, boom… slower pitch, same spin, same stride. The only thing that changed was the grip — and it made a big impact. 🧠 Here’s what you need to understand: You don’t need to learn a whole new pitch. You just need to learn how to manipulate the pitch you already have. Drop ➝ Off-speed Drop Curve ➝ Off-speed Curve Rise ➝ Off-speed Rise (I personally had bad luck with this pitch but I’ve seen some excel with it🤪) It’s about finger pressure, release point, and grip variation. Not slowing your body down. Your stride, your mechanics, your arm speed — that all stays the same. It’s trial and error. Some girls knuckle their pointer. Some spike it. Some choke the grip. I personally hiked mine. You’ve got to find what feels right for you and still gets the spin you want. The hardest part? Getting the grip to match the spin you already know. But once it clicks, most girls get it in 2-3 pitches. Having that “middle-speed” pitch — between your fastball and change-up — is a total difference-maker. Especially when your change-up isn’t sharp that day. You’ve got options. You stay in control.
