To me, the point of “nobody ever got fat from eating fruit & veg” is more just that the calories in them are generally so low that it (shouldn’t) make a meaningful difference - you’d have to eat a lot of them to have a problem, so if you aren’t losing in your “deficit”, chances are you probably need to cut something elsewhere not the fruit lol.

Yeah cos also things like banana and avocado are like 80-120 calories so you kinda need to track. Plus if you eat lots of fruit/veg it does add up.
