Third of three, the Father. In Luke fifteen the early Church heard the waiting-running father as God the Father (Tertullian said it in the second century). Two scandals we skip: "give me my inheritance" (Luke 15:12) meant, in that honor-shame world, "I wish you were dead," and the father grants it, handing over his own bios, his life. And the run: a distinguished man never ran, to run he bared his legs like a child and took public shame, which is exactly what the world saw in God, "he endured the cross, despising the shame" (Heb 12:2); a crucified God is foolishness to the world (1 Cor 1) and love to us. When Luke says the father "ran, fell on his neck, and kissed him" (15:20), those are the exact words of Esau to Jacob (Gen 33:4) and Joseph to his brothers, the wronged party runs first. And the deepest thing: both sons are lost the same way. The younger tries to come back as a hired servant (15:19); the elder "slaved all these years" (15:29). Both live under what psychologists call conditions of worth, the belief you have to earn your place. The father barely corrects their behavior, he corrects their picture of him: "Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours" (15:31). As Tozer said, what you think about God is the most important thing about you, and I'd add, so is what you believe he thinks about you. "This son of mine was dead and is alive again" (15:24). (Sources, for the curious: the "wish you were dead" reading is Brad Young and N.T. Wright; the shame of the run and the debated village "cutting off" custom, the kezazah, are Kenneth Bailey, Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes; the Esau/Joseph echo is verified in Edwards and Hultgren; "conditions of worth" is from clinical psychology, originally Carl Rogers.)
